Grapefruit and yarn sculpture. There is a dried grapefruit shell with coached pastel art yarn, a piece of orange peel magically straightened into a thin strip and punched with holes, yarn threaded through. this is one of my 'Crochet Bodies' series.

Somerset House

I had to carry this sculpture to Somerset House on my wheelchair, so it needed to be portable. I assembled the bottom of an office chair, the arm of an anglepoise lamp and a wheelchair wheel together with magnets and 3D printed parts. all steel.

‘a singular approach to thinking and making’

In my transdisciplinary practice, I explore and synthesise heart, body and organic/mechanical infrastructures of support as critical, elemental and poetic readings against systemically racist, sexist and ableist social structures. I stitch, collage and assemble broken forms, found objects and images, not to mend, but to augment. The undone forms become works that reject consumerism, heteronormativity, racism and the disability binary. I see my work as ‘a mode of engagement through which new territories, practices, relations and possibilities emerge’ (Meron et al 2024); I am carving out new territories of inclusion.

Whether I use new materials to reconfigure the canvas in a painterly context, or I deconstruct digital images as a response to social exclusion, my work mines my own personal experiences to shed new light on the human condition with the aim of bringing about connection and social change.
